What is a Diesel Engine?
The diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine; more specifically, it is a compression ignition engine. The fuel in a diesel engine is ignited by suddenly exposing it to the high temperature and pressure of a compressed gas containing oxygen (usually atmospheric air), rather than a separate source of ignition energy (such as a spark plug). This process is known as the diesel cycle after Rudolf Diesel, who invented it in 1892. While traditional diesel engine generators may not fit into our definition of 'alternative energy' sources, they are still a valuable addition to a remote power or grid back-up system.
Types of Diesel Engines
There are two classes of diesel engines: two-stroke and four-stroke. Most diesel engines generally use the four-stroke cycle, with some larger engines operating on the two-stroke cycle. Normally, banks of cylinders are used in multiples of two, though any number of cylinders can be used as long as the load on the crankshaft is counterbalanced to prevent excessive vibration.
Generator sets produce either single or three phase power. Most homeowners require single phase whereas industrial or commercial applications usually require three phase power. Diesel engine generators are recommended due to their longevity and lower operating costs. Modern diesel engines are quiet and generally require much less maintenance than comparably sized gas (natural gas or propane) units.
Role of Diesel Generators in the Mining Industry
The use of diesel generators is absolutely integral to the mining industry. The mining industry is a large part of the United States’ revenue, and the use of generators is a very important element within that industry. Whether it is coal, gas, iron ore, or precious metals, mining is a very important part of how the country functions. Diesel generators account for approximately 72% of the energy used to run various facets of the mining industry. The large drills and shovels, as well as excavating machinery, all run on diesel generators. Many of these generators are in the form of huge land roving trucks that help to extract the minerals and other items and then transport them. In most cases, these gigantic generators can haul over 300 tons of material at one time. Diesel has a lower volatility rate, making it a safer option for use in the mining industry.
Mining extracts the earth’s natural materials to provide energy. It is a business that is absolutely essential to the success of our economy. Without the help of diesel generators, the job could take much longer to accomplish and would require a lot more manpower and money to operate efficiently. These diesel powered generators provide a lot of muscle, capacity, and stability. From drilling trenches to busting up rock, carting out huge loads of materials and pulling up heavy amounts of coal, diesel generators provide the strength and capability needed to get the job done. As for the heavy and large equipment that is used, diesel generators are still the equipment of choice in the mining industry.
Are diesel generators better than gasoline generators?
Diesel generators are more efficient than their gasoline counterparts. This is primarily because they don't burn much fuel to produce power and have a high compression rate. As such, diesel generators require less fuel to run, making them an excellent choice for buyers looking for cost-efficiency.
